South Coast & Stewart Island
Our starting point, Dunedin, the “Scotland of the South”, wears its heritage with pride. Landmark buildings such as Olverstion historic house, the Dunedin Railway Station and Lanarch Castle with its magnificently manicured gardens showcase well-preserved Victorian and Edwardian Architecture whilst telling the colourful tales of days gone by.
On Dunedin’s doorstep, the rugged and windswept Otago Peninsula offers endless panoramic views. Here, rare yellow-eyed penguins, albatrosses and New Zealand fur seals all compete for visitors’ attention.
Following the scenic South Coast along the untamed Catlins Coast to Invercargill, farmlands and native forests fringe sandy beaches and rugged sea cliffs. Travelling the Southern-most reaches of New Zealand’s South Island, we will take the opportunity to wander the region’s sweeping bays to spot the prolific local marine- and birdlife; and stroll to Nugget Point Lighthouse to be equally well rewarded with sensational coastal views.
A short flight across the Foveaux Strait, transports you to another world. New Zealand’s remote and relatively untouched third island. Known in Maori as “Rakiura”- ‘the land of glowing skies’ – it’s difficult to know whether this remote and very special place earned its name from the opportunity to spot the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis) or from its picture-perfect sunsets. In any case, Stewart Island, is a natural refuge for countless marine and birdlife; and a true ‘must’ for any avid birdwatcher! Wake up to birdcalls, cruise to the neighbouring Ulva island and walk amongst predator-free podocarp forests to spot a collection of rare and colourful species, and join a twilight tour for the privileged opportunity to see the nocturnal native Kiwi in its natural environment. Slow down and unwind to enjoy wildlife and wild nature, wilderness and walks during our three-night stay on the island.
